What If Your Life Has Been Preparing You for This Moment? Finding Purpose in the Experiences We Never Expected

Have you ever looked back at something that once made no sense and realized, years later, that it changed the direction of your life? Perhaps it was a disappointment you desperately wanted to avoid. A door that closed. A relationship that changed. A person who entered your life unexpectedly. A loss that forced you to see life differently. Or an opportunity that seemed insignificant at the time but eventually led you somewhere you never imagined going.

While we are living through these experiences, we rarely understand their full meaning. We simply call them life. But sometimes, with the gift of hindsight, we begin to see connections. We recognize that one experience prepared us for another. One conversation planted a seed. One disappointment redirected us. One person awakened something within us. Even a difficult season may have developed strength, compassion, courage, or wisdom that we would later need. I have come to think of some of these moments as divine appointments.

A divine appointment does not have to arrive dramatically. There may be no extraordinary sign, announcing that something important is happening. Sometimes it looks remarkably ordinary. A simple conversation or introduction. An unexpected invitation or a quiet inner prompting. A moment when something simply says, Pay attention. And sometimes we do not recognize the appointment until years later. Purpose Does Not Always Arrive With a Map We often talk about purpose as though everyone should know exactly why they are here.

Find your purpose. Follow your passion. Discover your calling. These are beautiful ideas, but for someone who does not yet know the answer, they can also create pressure. What if purpose is not always something we find? What if sometimes it is something we gradually uncover? My own life has taught me this. There was a time when I could never have imagined myself speaking publicly, teaching, coaching, writing, or having conversations about purpose and human connection. I was once a shy young woman still discovering her confidence and her voice. Yet life kept placing me in situations that required more of me: Speak. Teach. Lead. Listen. Learn. Serve. At the time, I did not see these experiences as pieces of a larger picture. I was simply living them.

Today, I see them differently. Perhaps life was preparing me long before I understood what I was being prepared for. A Different Question When something difficult happens, one of our most natural questions is: Why is this happening to me? This is a deeply human question. But there may be another question worth asking: What might this experience be preparing me for? That question does not deny pain. It does not suggest that every hardship happens for a reason, nor does it require us to pretend that difficult experiences are somehow easy or desirable. Instead, it gives us another way of looking at what comes next. What can I learn? What have I discovered about myself?

What matters more to me now? How might I use what I have experienced to help someone else? Those questions can transform experience into wisdom. Your Story May Still Be Unfolding One of the things I believe deeply is that purpose has no expiration date. We sometimes behave as though becoming belongs to the young; as though there is an age by which we should have figured ourselves out. But life does not work that way. We continue learning and changing; we continue meeting people who alter our thinking. We continue discovering abilities we did not know we possessed; and we can continue contributing for as long as we are willing to remain curious, engaged, and open.

Perhaps some of the experiences you thought had passed their usefulness are carrying something forward. Perhaps the wisdom you gained from raising a family, building a career, surviving disappointment, beginning again, caring for someone, losing someone, loving someone, or finding your way through uncertainty is not merely your history, or perhaps it is part of what you have to give. Pay Attention This idea became part of the inspiration for my upcoming book, The Divine Appointment: Discovering Why You Are Here - an exploration of purpose, service, human connection, and the possibility that our lives may be speaking to us long before we understand the message.

I do not believe we need to have every answer. Sometimes we simply need to become more attentive. To the people we meet. To the opportunities that appear. To the ideas that will not leave us alone. To the quiet voice within that keeps whispering, “There is something more”. Your next divine appointment may not look important when it arrives. It may look like an ordinary conversation on an ordinary day. But perhaps that is the invitation: To remain awake to our own lives, and instead of asking only, “What is my purpose?” perhaps we might also ask: “What has my life been preparing me for?”
