When you live with someone that has a mental illness, life is difficult for everyone and not just for the person dealing with the illness. It could feel like the entire family is on edge as everyone works around one particular person ensuring they don’t go off the deep end. But we often forget that we also have to look after our own needs. Sometimes it can mean looking for help ourselves as we navigate the ins and outs of our environment. Or it can be just a quick getaway to sooth our tired minds.
Many of us have a lot to juggle already in our everyday lives, add to that trying to figure out if we’ve found the correct path to help our loved ones. Is our doctor the right one? Are there other treatments or modalities that can help and will this doctor work with us if we incorporate other ways? What experiences can we expect given changes in medications? The questions and concerns can be endless.
Having a mental illness can be a lifelong event. It’s not just giving someone some medication and all is well. Mental illness does not work that way. It can take years before you find the correct medications or alternative ways that can make your loved ones comfortable. But never give up on you or them.
Listen to your body and look after your own needs too. Find ways to help you cope with all that is going on. Take time out for yourself and destress. Understand the ailments that your loved ones are experiencing so you know how best to help them. It can be difficult, but be patience and try and keep the environment calm. It will go a long way in helping everyone cope with things.
There are some things we can’t change, so as difficult as it can be, we need to deal with what comes our way one step at a time. Let’s open up our hearts and find the beauty life can be.
